Sample Day Out

All three count as paid days. The letters S Start and F Finish are used to indicate the first and last paid days. For example, a cast member's first paid day usually a rehearsal day appears as SR; the last paid day usually a work day appears as WF.

Special consideration must be given to idle periods in the Day Out of Days. A cast member can either be held paid or dropped not paid during an idle period. The Screen Actors Guild has very specific rules addressing when an actor can—or especially cannot—be dropped.

The rules do not apply for actors with "run-of-show" agreements. In the Day Out of Days chart, hold days are indicated by an H. When a cast member is to be dropped, a D marks the last paid day before the drop, and a P indicates the day when the cast member will be picked back up. This filmmaking article is a stub.

Other abbreviations that are less commonly used, yet standard nonetheless are: 6. I stands for “Idle. ” This functions just like a Hold, but is not paid. T stands for “Travel. ” It means your actor is traveling. R stands for “Rehearsal. ” Use this when your actor is called to rehearse, but not shoot.

WD stands for “Work-Drop. ” Use this on your actor’s last day before a seven or more day hiatus. PW stands for “Pickup-Work.

” Use this when an actor comes back from seven or more day hiatus. PWF stands for “Pickup-Work-Finish. ” Use this when it’s your actor’s first and last on the job. SR stands “Start-Rehearsal. ” Use this when your actor is rehearsing and its his or her first day. Day 6 is an Off Day Notice in the above screenshot on the 6th of the month, it is an OFF DAY, signified by the grey box.

Any day that is an off day is not considered a shoot day, so DAY 6 of the production lands on SATURDAY, the 7th of the month. Day 8 is a Hold Day Now, here it shows an H. An H stands for HOLD, which means that Barney is not needed for that day, but according to SAG rules, he must be paid, because he is HELD.

The next shoot day, DAY 9, Barney is back to work signified by a W. Day 16 the Last Work Day for Barney And lastly, DAY 16 you will see a WF which stands for WORK FINISH. This is the last day the cast member Barney is needed for this production.

How do you create a Day out of Days report? You can either create this report by hand, and SAG Screen Actors Guild provides a standard DOOD form that you can download from their site. We have it here for your convenience.

Just click the button below to get it. Or, you can use a Film Scheduling program, like Gorilla Scheduling to create this report for you. In Gorilla Scheduling, you can’t run this report until you have completed your schedule, which includes scheduling your scenes on the stripboard.

So let me show you why Barney’s schedule on the DOOD report displays an SW, a W for the next 4 days, an H for the HOLD day, and then resumes work Day 8. The Stripboard Notice that Barney’s ID is 1.

This is important. In Gorilla Scheduling you can automatically have Gorilla number your Cast Members. Ok, so now let’s take a look at the first 5 days on the stripboard.

What we’re doing here is looking for BOARD ID 1 which is Barney. Scene 1 has Board ID 1 and 2, which means that Barney is needed for Scene 1, so is Cast Member Board ID 2, which as you can see on the board legend here on the left Cast Member: AMANDA.

You will see that the ID: 1 for Cast Member BARNEY is populated on all days, except for Day 8. On the DOOD report, notice that ID 1 is HELD. What is a HOLD really mean? So, real quick what is a HOLD? A hold means that you are holding the cast member and paying them, even though they are not working.

According to SAG rules you can hold an actor for 10 or sometimes 14 days. If they are not needed for 10 days or more you can DROP them, and then PICK them up later on in the schedule.

Check with SAG to see what the HOLD and DROP rules are for you particular production. Got it, then what is a DROP? Let me show you now, a drop example, here with the cast member THE BELLBOY, ID 7.

Drop - Then Pickup On the Day out of Days report above, ID 7, The Bellboy has an SWD on DAY 1. This means that this Cast Member starts work on this day, but is immediately dropped because there are 10 days before the schedule requires him to work again, which is on DAY 18, signified above with PWF , which stands for PICKUP WORK FINISH.

Another thing to know is that a cast member can only be dropped once during the schedule. So if there are two instances of a cast member being dropped, you can select which one to use, the first drop or the second drop, and you can specify that preference in Gorilla Scheduling.

These are all important considerations when scanning the report. Before we create the DOOD Report to determine how any days the actors are working, we should probably confirm which cast members are in which scenes.

When we take a look at our shooting script , we see that our characters' names now have corresponding numbers. And now that our cast members all have corresponding numbers, these ID's will automatically populate onto strips on the stripboard. And when that happens, we can schedule our cast and their scenes accordingly.

A stripboard is quite literally a board of color-coded strips, and each strip has scene info on it. See below:. The scene info on each strip can be a scene number, a scene heading, cast in that scene, and location.

Notice the cast ID's populated. As you view your stripboard, double check that all the cast members are assigned to each strip in the stripboard. Important tip: the cast is assigned based on dialogue, so make sure to confirm if there are any non-speaking cast present in a scene. This is, by default, based on when cast is mentioned in script, but you can click-drag to reorder cast IDs at any point on the Cast Members page.

The info on the stripboard informs how you build your schedule. There are many things to consider when scheduling — typically talent is considered first. Make sure the schedule works with their busy life.

And then of course, location is another huge consideration. Shooting all the scenes that happen in the same location typically makes the most sense on your budget. Add them by how many pages you plan to shoot in a day , add them by the amount of hours you plant to take, or, of course, add them in manually.

That's why day breaks are so important. If you forget to denote the end of Day 1, Day 2, etc. Cast ID number 4 might be scheduled on Day 1 only, but if you forget to use a day break denoting the end of that day, the report will say that cast member is supposed to be on two days in a row.

Day breaks keep you and the entire schedule organized. In the software you can add banners to note meal breaks , or any other piece of info you need to share. Keep your project full-steam ahead with a smart and efficient schedule. Download our FREE e-book to learn how to build a shooting schedule that will keep you on time, on budget and on your way to the finish line.

Once you filter by cast, you'll be able to see when each cast member starts work, is on hold, and what day they wrap. If we look at the report now, we have a better understanding of what everything means. Stuart, Claire, and Tony all start and end on the same day.

They also work all three days. How you use the DOOD is up to you. You don't have to filter by cast, you can filter by any element you want, and it will populate for the day it's scheduled. For instance, if we filter by props, we would notice that a guitar is needed for all three days, but we only need the shot glasses for the last two.

This is helpful to make sure we have everything prepped and ready. Whatever it is, the DOOD Report will be your best friend. Identifying and determining cast and their costs is critical to a successful production. Import scripts and reorder scenes to make a schedule.

Hand-designed to be both attractive and functional. Save your time and money for the things that really matter! That's why we've prepared this helpful Template for you! Not only will it save you time and headaches, but it will have other people you work with impressed with your professionalism.

Download this free Day out of Days Template: Access Template Helpful Learning: Creating A Day out of Days Report - Free Template W hen I first heard about a Day Out Of Days report abbreviated as DOOD , I was quite confused. It was my first feature film.

Day Out Of Days reports are a little mysterious sounding, mostly because the name is so… odd. At first glance, it just looks like a spreadsheet with lots of columns and rows. Each column represents a day in the schedule and each row represents an actor.

The intersection of these rows and columns forms a grid, a bit like a checkerboard. Within each cell of this grid is an abbreviation code that shows the work status of that person for that day.

The trickiest part is knowing all the correct code abbreviations to put in the cells. The most common are S Start , W Work , and F Finish.

You can also combine these together to mean different things. I should also mention that DOODs are not just for breaking down cast schedules; you can also create a DOOD report for any element type, such as costumes or extras. Most commonly, however, DOODs are used to breakdown the schedules for the named cast members on your show.

On any shoot longer than a day or two, a Day out of Days report becomes increasingly necessary. If you are working on a feature film, you will absolutely need to create a DOOD. If you think about it, this makes sense. Actors are no different. Having a DOOD allows you to have one simple document that you can send to all cast that gives them the basic info they need to know to plan their schedules.

Plus it saves you from having to answer dozens of emails separately. Most people make Day Out Of Days either in Excel or an equivalent program or else generate one from the scheduling software they are using for instance, Movie Magic.

Because a DOOD is essentially just a grid of columns and rows, it is very simple to make and manage in Excel. To download it, just fill submit the form below or click here to see a preview of the template.

Just like saws and hammers and wrenches, each document has its own special ability that it possesses that none of the other documents can match. You're only a step away. Hit enter to search or ESC to close. Close Search. Access Template.
