Cheap cookie baking sheets

The name of the pan should hopefully tip you off, but that's not always the case. Sometimes, a cookie sheet will be called a baking sheet, for instance. Ultimately, the difference between a sheet pan and a cookie sheet is in the sides of the pan and the thickness of the metal.

If you ever baked cookies with your parents growing up, you've probably seen a cookie sheet. They're designed strictly for baking their namesake treats, according to Martha Stewart , and they normally have a lip on one or both of the short sides for easy gripping.

The long sides of the pan are flat, which helps the finished cookies slide off easily. Cookie sheets are sold in a few common sizes, including 16 x 14 inches, 15 x 10 inches, 14 x 13, and 14 x 12 inches. There's no universal, agreed-upon sizing — they just need to fit inside a standard home oven.

These pans are ideally made of thin aluminum — The New York Times recommends around gauge so that cookies will crisp up quickly on the bottom. Sometimes these pans have rims on all sides, which you'll typically see with discount department store models.

These inexpensive designs are usually too thin and flimsy, and your cookies can suffer from burnt bottoms and undercooked tops. There are also some sheets made with two thin layers of metal with air in between to prevent burnt bottoms and sold as "insulated" or "air bake.

The cheaper, thinner ones can warp and buckle, and they tend to have a shorter life span. The major difference between cookie sheets and sheet pans is that sheet pans have rolled 1-inch edges on all four sides. The edges keep food on the pan from sliding off into the oven, explains Serious Eats.

Sheet pans are standard-issue in commercial kitchens, so they have uniform sizes to make them easy to identify. Full sheet pans are in inches 26 x 18, half sheets are 18 x 13, quarter sheets are 13 x 9. You might also come across "jelly rolls," which are 15 x 10 and designed specifically for making jelly roll cakes, according to Southern Living.

Hand washing is recommended, and some users have reported that the pans scratch easily if scrubbed with abrasive materials. There is a common problem with these pans, and that has to do with the way they are packaged.

But this is really a testament to its inherent nonstick properties without the use of any additional coatings like Teflon. Unlike other products in the stainless category, happy customers did not report a tendency to warp with these pans.

A little easier on the wallet than other options, these stainless pans are reported to be truly warp resistant, which is a real treat.

Though cooking acidic foods in or on aluminum pots and pans that have not been anodized or clad in a material that is non-reactive or nonstick should generally be avoided, as acids are reactive with aluminum and this may result in damage to the cookware as well, the risk of metal leaching into foods is still minimal.

And making actual "drop" cookies is no good, if I don't form perfect little balls first, they burn even worse evident in the first batch I just made, where I didn't do balls they burned worse than the second pan where I did.

Bake the cookies in the middle rack so it's as even as possible. I get the half-sized baking sheets from the local restaurant supply store.

Instead of dropping the cookies directly on the sheet, though, I use parchment paper to line the sheets. I got a small scooper ricers? It helps make sure my cookies are all the same size. Jetta Ars Legatus Legionis. Nevarre Ars Legatus Legionis.

As BC has mentioned, your first option is something with two sheets of metal bonded together, with an airspace along the bottom between the two sheets.

You want it to be as heavy as possible-- the thin metal stuff esp. without the air space does burn stuff quickly. Something like this will be moderately spendy, but not unreasonable.

These work great, but require maintenance after every use they can't be used in a dishwasher or washed with soap. They're quite heavy and yes I'll block some of the radiant heat and allow the cookies to bake more evenly. JubJub Well-known member. They sell a 3 pack for I think "Disher" is the term you want.

A ricer is something that you could use for mashed potatoes, it squeezes the item through small holes, making them into "rice" shaped sizes. Thanks for the correction. I can never remember the correct term.

Pity all my stuff is at my parents' house. Its an old, cheap apartment oven. It isn't level either, when I cook on the top, liquid pools in one side of the skillet.

Highly annoying. We only have the middle rack that we use, the other one is way in the bottom out of the way ever since I burned my arm on it when it was in the top area getting something from the rack under it, tilted my arm up too high, now I have a nice scar.

Does it really make a huge difference? parchment paper is good stuff. It'll help a little, but mostly it prevents sticking. I've only seen one brand at my store though, it's Reynolds brand, and is in a blue box. I didn't have a problem with these sticking, they came right off.

In a pre-heated oven, the air itself cooks whatever is in there and cooks by convection, not direct radiation. So why are they not always the first choice among cookie bakers? Some sheets may produce a metallic taste to some foods. You can prevent that in cookies by choosing a high quality aluminum sheets and lining the sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mat.

Since aluminum can tend to rust, dry sheets thoroughly after washing. More expensive than aluminum sheets, steel sheets are available in four types: black steel, aluminized steel much like aluminum sheets but sturdier , stainless steel, and carbonized steel.

Of the four, only black steel and aluminized steel conduct heat evenly and are best for baking cookies. Yet the black steel requires special care. To prevent corrosion, it must be treated regularly with kosher salt. To prevent rust, it must be dried completely after each use and washing.

Also called air-cushioned sheets or double-thick pans, insulated cookie sheets are constructed with two layers of metal with air in between. Insulation prevents cookies from browning too quickly, allowing cookie tops and bottoms bake evenly.

They work well for cookies that remain pale or lightly colored even after baking, such as shortbread, sugar cookies, and spritz. They bake cookies slower.

As a result you will need to modify recipe baking times accordingly. Since insulated sheets are best for cookies with soft edges, use a different kind of sheet when baking cookies that are to brown or be crispy. Nonstick cookie sheets heat easily and allow cookies to slip off easily after baking.

The sheets are also easy to clean. Nonstick sheets are made to repel moisture, which produces a crunchier, crispier baked cookie texture. Light nonstick sheets produce lightly browned cookies.

When using nonstick sheets for cookies, you might want to experiment with baking temperatures and possibly reduce the oven temperature degrees to prevent over baking or over crisping. The nonstick surface quality varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but in all cases the coating eventually wears off — meaning sooner or later, you will need to replace these sheets.

Some of my recipes can survive a low quality cookie sheet, but having an insulated one definitely makes a big difference.

Yes, the first one is a great option. I find I enjoy baking more when I have the right tools, insulated sheets included. All these sheets are awesome.

I fear kitchen tools that leave a big dent in my wallet. I remember buying my current sheet as a second hand because i could not afford a new one from the supermarket. This was really helpful! I read this article because I love to bake. I usually use cheap dollar store or Walmart baking pans. This information will be put to use. I love to bake cookies and other things, so thank you so much. I always go for the cheap pans which cause my cookies to get burnt or stick.

This article helped me a lot, so thank you so much! I love your website. I have been looking for new baking sheets to replace my old, discolored ones and saw the Nordic Ware ones on Amazon.

I second-guessed myself when I saw how inexpensive they are and decided to hold off on buying them. I am glad to see that my logic was correct. Great minds think alike, right?

I currently own a pair of the Farberware cookie sheets the ones without an edge , but they became discolored and warped after about three months of normal use. It might just be a problem with the edge-less design, but I figured this might be something that you would like to know about. I have been thinking of getting the silicone mats because an article I read a while ago said that baking spray can cause discoloration.

Have you found this to be true in general, or is it the quality of materials used to make the spray or the sheets? Thanks for the article and recommendations! It has made the process of shopping for bakeware a whole lot easier for me.

Baking is my passion, so I found this article very informative and helpful…much appreciated. I would love a recipe for the cookies in the first photo though, the glazed ones. Thank you for sharing.

I was very disappointed in the NordicWare sheet pan. Hi, Question. Are there not any top quality pans without aluminum or copper? Hi Diane. Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, these are not the best heat conductors. Using silicone liners or parchment paper is an excellent option.

Thanks for sharing this guide Sarah. I was wondering if Aluminium bakeware is safe to use for a long term baking? Which material should I be focused on for safety purposes? From my own research, the best baking sheets are not aluminum but stainless steel.

I only work with vegetarian cuisine, cooking or baking. In the meanwhile I am purchasing unbleached parchment paper for liners.

I also wonder about mat safety, all looking too plastic for me. Glad you spoke up, what I was hoping to find in comments. This is certainly a hotly debated topic, but research-based scientific consensus is that cooking on aluminum bakeware poses no threat to health.

Lining pans with parchment paper is an excellent idea to extend the life of your pans, and silicone mats also provide for easy cleanup. Keep in mind that they should not be heated above recommended temperatures, as described according to the manufacturer.

Both bake identically and feel and look the same. They must be good sugar cookie sheets. They have tens of thousands of five-star reviews on Amazon alone! Don't take my word for it though. See for yourself what the eight best baking sheets of are, I'm pleased to share: Best of These baking sheets are heavy-duty, commercial-grade aluminum.

Therefore, they do not warp. They bake my sugar cookies evenly with no browning on the bottoms such a pet peeve of mine. The full baking sheets do not fit well. The pans are a bit too narrow for the shelf braces and sideways are too long.

However, I will use them like these when needed when I bake sugar cookies. See how I save time and effort. Not only does parchment allow for easy clean-up, but it also helps the cookies bake evenly, either of these pans can leave a minimal amount of aluminum residue on the washcloth when washing them.

As first a professional cake decorator, I bought Fat Daddio pans. I fell in love with them. Since I was so happy with them, I ordered a couple of the anodized Fat Daddio ones for my sugar cookies , thinking these would be the best baking sheets.

Because I was used to the cheaper pans that did not turn the bottoms of my baked sugar cookies brown. No matter the tweaking on the oven temperature I had a brand new oven then and time baking the cookies , they left me with less than perfect results, including doughy middles at times.

If you have read in other places on my site, like How to Bake Sugar Cookies , then you see I do not use a cooling rack with the Nordic Ware pans. However, with the Fat Daddio pans, I did and still got the brown bottoms.

Though this was my fault because I knew that but didn't think ahead. I faithfully use parchment paper. Without the sides, the cookies and paper wanted to slide off the pan when transferring from the oven.

The idea with no sides is two-fold. First they allow for air to flow more freely into the cookie. Second, they give room to get your spatula in under the cookie. If you have read How to Bake Sugar Cookies link above , you'll see that part doesn't matter to me.

It was quite small with no sides. I still was not happy. They are definitely not the size for a sugar cookie decorator with a business! At that point, I gave up. Why throw good money after bad?
