In recent years, we've tested more than food storage containers in the Good Housekeeping Institute. In our most recent test, we tested three different samples of the same container from 21 different brands.

On the samples that were freezer-, microwave- and dishwasher-safe, we performed a freezer to microwave test in one of the containers to assess durability and staining. We also ran each sample through the dishwasher five times to see how they fared. We then tested both samples and a new, control sample for leaking by conducting two different tests: we filled each sample with water and shook it for 15 seconds to see if any lost any water and we also filled each with water and left it upside overnight to see if it leaked.

Our top performers did not show any marks of deformation after moving from the freezer to the microwave and running through the dishwasher five times. They also barely lost a gram of water in our leakproof tests. The top performing food storage containers that were were lightweight, stackable, easy to use and see-through stood out as the best containers for meal prep.

Glass tends to last longer and be less prone to staining, but it can be heavier and even the strongest ones can crack or chip. Plastic is lightweight and often less expensive but stains easily and some people prefer not to microwave food in it. Stainless steel is another option that's durable and long lasting but can't be microwaved.

We tend to use an assortment based on our needs but glass is the most versatile option. Some can be round but we find them a little trickier to transport. Some also come with dividers for portioning out food. These dividers can feel helpful to some people but limiting to others.

If you like variety or to cook in batches, look for a meal prep container set that comes with different size and shape options. While some of the containers in these type of sets may seem too big or too small to take back and forth with, there will include at least a few suitable options.

Lids that press down to close are often thinner and easier to store but don't always offer the best leak-proof assurance. Other features to consider are whether they're freezer-, dishwasher- and microwave safe.

Some glass containers are even oven-safe if you prefer heating or even cooking! your food that way. The type of meal prep container you use is a matter of preference. Some people may like how lightweight plastic is while others may prefer glass that feels more durable.

Plastic tends to stain but glass can break. Both can usually be microwaved but glass is often more heat-resistant. Glass also tends to cost more but it's less disposable.

Our recommendation is to use the one that makes the most sense for you and your family. We try to stick to containers that have good seals, are made of a quality plastic, glass or stainless steel, will last long and can be used in a variety of ways from the freezer to the microwave.

We also prefer meal prep containers that are dishwasher-safe to make cleanup easier. The ability to stack is important to us as is having containers that are clear or transparent so we can easily keep an eye on what food we have in our fridge.

I bought a set of these 17 ounce and also a set of the 25 ounce boxes. Bought another set of each later, after using them with great results for freezing quantities of applesauce, sauteed zucchini, buttercup squash, etc. They stack beautifully in the freezer. I distribute the boxes around the freezer for faster freezing, then stack them up after they're frozen.

The rectangular shape makes for faster freezing and thawing than the cubical shape of my other boxes. For everyday use, I grab a box and lid and plop in leftovers, open packages of cheese, desserts, small quantities of veggies or fruit you name it. The plastic is less porous and more rigid than the freezer boxes I've used in the past.

When I first got them, I was afraid they would be too brittle, especially since the lids click so tight that you have to put some oomph into it to unsnap them. But they are tougher than they look, even opening a box right out of the freezer.

Not a single one has broken or warped, after going through the freezer, then heating in the microwave, then going through the dishwasher. These don't seem to retain odors like Tupperware-type containers, either. I write the contents on the lid with a Sharpie, which stays put until I scrub it off.

Having the two box sizes, which use identical lids, is super handy. I can't speak to how leakproof they are.
