BUT the packaging is not an essential part of it. I couldn't have cared less if it was plastic or pretty, the real prize was always inside, so keep this in mind when deciding an option. Some are full of nasty chemicals that could irritate delicate skin. Remember, what goes onto our skin, goes into our bodies. Yep, you can call me old fashioned. But coasters are like mini functional canvases that kids can paint and decorate. It gives kids the opportunity to see their design as a functional piece of art, rather than the usual painting on paper, stuck to the fridge.

These letters are a nice touch where kids can receive the first letter of their name to decorate. Plastic straws are developing a bad name. Wands used to be a fairy princess thing, but I think Harry Potter has made the wand quite gender-neutral.

You can buy ones pre-made or you can make theme-specific wands by glueing wooden or cardboard shaped cutouts to a length of thin dowel. Wand decorating can also be a great party activity. Never a truer word spoken. You can find a range of mini books available, although this will likely be limited to very young children, often board books.

Perfect for drawing, spelling out or doodling on a board or better still, a concrete path. Colourful chalk sticks are super cheap and you can get those nice fat ones that are great for little hands.

I recently hosted a birthday party for my grandkids and had the same concern. My solution: I got shoeboxes and cut two round holes in the lids. Then I sewed a pile of small beanbags.
